At 17:00 - 19:00
The concert is led by the LSO's Guest Conductor, Michael Tilson Thomas, USA, and the soloist is Chinese-born piano virtuoso, Yuja Wang. She is a piano phenomenon, and one of contemporary classical music's biggest stars.
Yuja Wang plays Brahms' powerful Piano Concerto No. 2, a virtuoso piece full of dark colour and deep emotions. The second work on the programme is another introspective drama, Tchaikovsky's magnificent Pathétique Symphony. It was to be Tchaikovsky's last work, and in it he moves from the dizziest heights to a tragic finale which acts like an omen of death. Tchaikovsky conducted the inaugural performance of the symphony personally, and he died of cholera just a few weeks later.
