Fairy-tale opera: Hansel & Gretel

The idea for the opera came from Humperdinck's sister, Adelheid Wette, who asked him to write music for some songs she had written for her children. After various revisions, a complete opera was composed that premiered at the Court Theatre in Weimar on 23 December 1893, conducted by Humperdinck' friend, Richard Strauss. The opera was an instant major success. During its first year alone, it was staged in more than 20 German theatres.
