Exactly one year after the inaugural performance in New York, Tivoli presents the American composer's very personal take on the story Beethoven used over 200 years ago in his opera Fidelio.
Prisoner of the State was premiered by the New York Philharmonic, and the critics were united: this was a modern masterpiece, told with an intensity that kept the audience on the edge of their seats throughout. It was the composer's love of Beethoven's Fidelio that inspired him to write his own opera about the same story, but this new work maintains a respectful distance from its great predecessor. With an ultra-precise focus on the drama at the centre of the story, David Lang creates a very contemporary, gripping and dark tale of universal injustice and hope for a better world.
